Hello everybody. I am recently working on a very complex website (a site for a tour operator agency). There are many features, such exploring geographical areas, finding structures and watch their services, reserving rooms and so on. A site like this has so many big or little buttons and links that I've found extremely limiting building my layout using a vertical rhytm of 18 pixel.

More: I've rcently read "Stop Stealing Sheep" by Spiekermann. There's a chapter explaining grids... Spiekermann shows the grid used in the book and I've found that the basics grid is based on a multiple of 7 pixel: captions have 7 pt of inline, main text 14 pt etc. It is exactly like I mean building the grid behind the website I'm working on. My point is that 18 pixel for vertical rythm is too limiting for very complex websites..

    What do you think?

Just because you have an 18px grid for text doesn't mean images have to conform.
Just have the top of the images align with the grid.
You're never going to be able to do anything about that, whatever grid you use, there will always be some user generated image whose height is not a multiple of your grid spacing.

The vertical grid is to keep text aligned horizontally, and to make sure that reading the text is comfortable. You use a grid for a purpose, and just because you have used a grid, doesn't mean you have achieved good readability.
